Episode 82: Presidential Perspectives with Barry Rafe
“
Get your head out of your book and understand that when you walk into a room, you've got to look at every individual in that room.
A key skill of leadership is actually trying to understand what their view of the world is, and the way you get there is to listen to stories.
Listen to what they, listen to their story, what drives them, what motivates them, what success looks like for them, how they are emotionally connected with the world.”
Barry Rafe, 2011 President of the Actuaries Institute.
Martin Mulcare asks Barry Rafe to share some reflections from his senior leadership experience, including his role as the 2011 (and part of 2018) President of the Actuaries Institute.
In this interview Barry shares:
Why he put his hand up to serve as President of the Actuaries Institute,
How his winding corporate career — from AMP to Accenture to running his own consulting firm — shaped his approach to leadership,
What it really means to chair a board,
The importance of holding firm opinions loosely, and
His top tip for actuaries aspiring to leadership roles.
